As we shake of a chilly Winter and eagerly await Spring, here’s a few of our favourite outdoor activities in and around St.Andrews, in anticipation of those brighter, sunnier days.
This stunning beaches stretches for almost 2 miles with uninterrupted views back towards St.Andrews. The beach is backed by grassy dunes and is located just a stones through from the famous Old Course. Brave enough to nip in for a swim? We suggest heading to the Jigger Inn for a warm up pint and well deserved pub lunch afterwards.
St.Andrews Castle offers an exciting day out. These historic ruins are beautiful in themselves but there is plenty more to explore on site, including an underground mine and the bottle dungeon – a terrifying historic prison*. After all that exploring we recommend a stroll down to the Castle Sands, a tiny rocky beach, and one of my favourites. Secluded and peaceful, with views out across the historic outdoor swimming pools, its great spot to relax (photo above).
*There is an admission fee to get into the Castle, which is discounted for students.
St.Andrews Botanic Gardens are a hidden gem, located just off the Cannongate to the South-West of the town. With woodland walks, ponds, waterfalls and a glassful filled with cacti and tropical plants, it really is a botanical adventure. The gardens often host events and exhibits, as well as classes and performances so its great place, not just for Spring, but to keep an eye on through-out the year.
