Morning Coffee:

Well, ok, it’s not lunch, but we couldn’t miss out that first, energy boosting, coffee of the day! The Keys Bar on Market Street does a cracking morning coffee, as well as great hot chocolates and a selection of teas – with a tasty continental biscuit on the side, for that extra pick me up! The North Point Cafe, on North Street is another favourite spot, serving up fresh coffees and teas and giant hot chocolates – request as many marshmallows as you dare – located very near the cathedral, it’s also a great location for a little relaxing after a hard day of St Andrews’ sightseeing. It’s also very kid friendly, but be warned, it does get very busy and can be a little noisy on occasion.

A Quick Snack:

Not long for lunch, in need of a quick but tasty snack? Munch has come up tops in our staff insiders guide, as one of the best places for a yummy but inexpensive lunch. There is a very good selection of sandwiches  with a wide variety of breads and fillings, as well as hot and cold rolls and snacks. Although we have it on note; Try to avoid the busy 1pm school lunch period when queues get incredibly long. Fisher and Donaldson has been a local favourite for many a year. With two St Andrews shops, South Street and Church street, you are never too far from a delicious fudge doughnut, coffee tower or jam roll, for that sweet end to a quick lunch! There are also some really delicious homemade loafs in many varieties – so especially good for picnic supplies.

A Sit Down Lunch on a Tight Schedule:

Looking for a tasty and relaxing lunch – but have to back at work within the hour? It was hard to narrow it down, but here are two of our very favourite lunch time cafe/restaurants. The West Port Bar and Restaurant, conveniently located near the Inchdairnie offices, does a good selection of lunch time meals, with a daily changing range of specials so there’s always something new to try. The prices are very reasonable and the service is quick enough that you can be in and out within the hour with a full tummy and a smile on your face.  Janettas – the infamous St Andrews ice cream shop – has opened a wonderful little cafe just next door to the original store on South Street. There is a good selction of daily changing salads,  as well as homemade soup, paninis and sandwiches and a kids menu. The milkshakes are a must and it would surely be wrong not to finish off a yummy lunch with an even yummier award wining ice cream!

Long and Relaxing:

There is such an abundance of good, local restaurants in St Andrews, we are very much spolit for choice. However we had to narrow it down, so here are two of our favourites for enjoying a relaxing and leisurely lunch. The Dolls House Restaurant is a lovely place we’ve all enjoyed time after time. The quality is excellent, the staff always very friendly and courteous and the surroundings – full of traditional toys – take you back to your childhood. There are often lunch time deals on – such as £7.95 for two courses – which often include freshly caught local fish as well as such delicacies as Glazed belly of Carnoustie pork, pumpkin purée and jus. A great restaurant for a special lunch time treat without breaking the bank. Our final lunch time choice, is a popular choice with holiday makers and locals alike. With lovely views over the Old course, The Swilcan Restaurant at the Links ClubHouse, provides a welcome setting for a relaxing lunch time stop. There are the usual sandwiches and soup on offer but also a number of really tasty different alternatives including bowls of muscles, homemade terrine, burgers and a selection of fish dishes. The fish, chips and mushy peas are always a winner. The menus’ are seasonal, the staff are lovely and the views are worth a visit alone!

A big thanks to Sylvia, Kathy and Gaye for their tips and reviews! We hope you enjoy these great lunch venues as much as us.
