For over 260 years the Royal and Ancient has stood as a male only institution. A historic St Andrews golf club, the Royal and Ancient clubhouse stands behind the first tee of the world famous Old Course. The decision, announced on Thursday 18th coincided with the Scottish Referendum and saw an 85:15 majority in favour of female membership. The club proudly announced the ‘Yes’ decision, made by it’s 2,500 global members and has opened it’s doors to female members. However, the battle for gender equality still prevails with three clubs on the British Open circuit still promoting a ‘male-only’ title – Royal Troon, Muirfield and Royal St George’s. We strongly believe that the recent St.Andrews vote can encourage a wider change in clubhouse membership policies and that these changes must continue across the British circuit.
